A NEW HIP-HOP DANCE MUSICAL
ONE, is a Black urban "remix" of the 4,000-year-old story of Moses. The story is re-told as if it occurred today in New York City. For instance, 'Egyptian Slavery’ is the World Addiction Industry in all its forms (drugs, human trafficking, porn, etc)…'Pharaoh' is KING, a CEO of an international financial corporation who has a secret life laundering millions in drug money, and ’Moses’ is MO a Black teen hip-hop star, who debuts a 5-CD concept album, entitled "The Birth of A Nation" on the empowering growth of hip-hop internationally.
Though not 'religious',ONE presents an anti-drug, anti-corruption, anti-human trafficking message with the spiritual theme of honesty. As with the original story, ONE illuminates the universal justice issue of abuse of power and underscores the power of family unity.
Written entirely in verse and with ‘spoken word-choreography,' ONE uses searing hip-hop dance and mind-blowing graffiti via special effects video/projection.ONE’s music is propelled by DJs and innovative rap.
ONE creatively transforms this ancient classic hit story into a hot, edgy, groundbreaking musical, in the same manner that West Side Story and Rent broke new ground in their time.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
ONE began with two seed grants from Steven Spielberg via his personal foundation. Spielberg’s gift was immediately matched with a $100K grant from Jubilee, a Boston Black church of 6,000 members, and by $100K from the late Ross Love, a Black philanthropist. This funding allowed the creative team to transform the work from an earlier narrated concert version (entitled MOSES) into a fully viable musical, with extensive dance choreography. Working with eight select first-company Alvin Ailey dancers, with Ailey’s lighting designer, Al Crawford, and with outstanding hip-hop crews, the team developed ONE via four staged workshop performances. These took place in Chicago, Martha’s Vineyard and then in New York City at the JCC of Manhattan Theater and at the Alvin Ailey Theater. Darren Henson, hip-hop choreographer extraordinaire, choreographed a fifth workshop at Ailey Studios. Actor Val Kilmer furthered the concept of ONE by recording various experimental voice-overs. Director, Keith Batten, who directs international productions of Aida for Disney Theatrical, guided the development of the script over two years of revisions.
